Plated Subscription Box Review: Unboxing and Pricing

posted in: Product Reviews | 0

Despite popular belief, every night isn’t full of new and exciting recipes that are eagerly awaiting to be featured on the blog. In fact, most nights are filled with quick and easy recipes that we repeat again and again. Selma and I have full time jobs and are real people so we don’t always have time to plan out extravagant meals or shop for food. Plus, when we do have time to shop, we always tend to buy the same old ingredients because we know what to do with them. In steps Plated to spice up our lives. We stumbled across a Gilt City deal for three meals for two for only ~$20 so we definitely had to give it a shot to see what all the fuss was about.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Plated, it’s a meal subscription service that sends everything you need to make delicious meals right to your doorstep. You simply make an account online, select your meals and delivery date, and then wait for your box. When it arrives, you follow the detailed instruction card inside and dinner is served. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

So without further adieu, let’s get into it.

First, all ingredients are sourced and shipped locally so you know that you’re getting fresh ingredients. They usually ship things out the night before so you know they’re not sitting in a warehouse for a few days before it gets to you.

Upon opening your box, you’ll find your recipe cards sitting on top, separate from all of your ingredients.

These cards beautifully detail each step of the prep and cooking process and even gives you helpful tips along the way.

Once you open your insulated bag, you will find all of your ingredients neatly packed in separate bags according to the meal. Everything is perfectly portioned out so you have exactly what you need to make each dish. So remember that bunch of mint you bought for that one recipe and only ended up using 2 leaves? Never again. This realistically cuts down on unnecessary cost and waste by providing you with only what you will use. Also, something to note is that they pack your meat and fish closest to the freezer packs so they stay nice and cold. Smart.

This is everything laid out nicely so you can see just how neatly packaged everything is. We ordered 3 meals for 2 people so we got a ton of food. All in all, our box included 41 individual ingredients! Something else to note is the quality of the ingredients that you receive.

  1. All meat is locally sourced and is antibiotic and hormone-free.
  2. All fish is 100% sustainable, domestic and almost exclusively wild-caught.
  3. All produce is seasonal, local and hand-picked.

And finally, everything is kept nice and cold for up to 24 hours after you receive the box with these reusable ice packs. So even if you’re not home when your box arrives, these little guys will keep everything cold and fresh.

Most recipes begin at $12/plate and can go all the way up to $30/plate depending on the ingredients. There is also a $6 shipping charge with free shipping on orders over $50. But you can always add dessert for $4 to get free shipping if you’re close to $50.

Below are some examples with pricing so you can get a feel for the actual cost.

2 recipes (4 total plates) = $48 per week ($6 shipping)

3 recipes (6 total plates) = $72 per week (Free shipping)

4 recipes (8 total plates) = $96 per week (Free shipping)

If your first thought is “this is kinda expensive”, you would be right. I mean $12 per plate is a little steep considering you can probably make the same meal for half the price. Plus, if you have a family of 4-6, it can get pricey very quickly. However, you are essentially paying for two things – quality ingredients and convenience. If your time is worth a lot to you, then this is definitely the service you need in your life. I also believe they are catering to a specific demographic: singles, couples, and young professionals. There are definitely people out there who simply don’t have the time or the luxury of shopping for their food after a busy work day so for a price, Plated takes care of it for you.

In my opinion, this is an awesome concept and so far has been a pleasant experience. The ingredients are top notch, the recipes are healthy and delicious, and best of all no food is wasted. As for the price, it’s hard for us to justify spending $12 a person for dinner every night. At that price point, you can easily get take-out and not have to worry about cooking and cleaning. Plus, we usually rely on left overs for lunch the next day so if we did this every night, we would have to spend more money on lunch the next day. Nevertheless, I see this being the perfect solution for a date night or special occasion. It is cheaper than going out and it’s actually a lot of fun cooking together.

And with that, check out what we made below:

Seared Pollock with Blood Orange, Olives, and Grapefruit Salad

Thai Peanut Chicken Curry with Sticky Rice

Vietnamese Caramel Fish with Vermicelli and Bok Choy

Roast Beef-Spiced Steak Salad with Horseradish Dressing

Spicy Mapo Tofu with Crispy Mushrooms, Scallions, and Rice

Sesame-Soy Udon Bowls with Crispy Tilapia

If you’re looking to try Plated, you can use this referral link to get 2 free plates on your first order. However, my suggestion would be to hold out for a Gilt City or Groupon deal to come out.
