After finally settling in to the new apartment, Selma and I began a series of DIY projects to make the most out of our tiny space. Unfortunately, when you have a tiny ass apartment, the only space you have to work with is the wall. For example, we put all of our bikes up on the wall with this nifty DIY Bike Rack. Every bit of space counts! And since we were starting to run out of room in the cabinets for all of our mugs and glassware, we decided to install a shelf above our dishwasher to save some space.
This project was actually very simple once we figured out exactly what we wanted to do. Our plan was to get a shelf that had hooks underneath for mugs. But sadly, there are very few pre-made options out there to choose from that would fit. So we decided to make our own with some very inexpensive pieces from Ikea.
Things you will need:
- FABIAN Wall shelf – $7.99
- GRUNDTAL Rail – $7.99
- S-Hooks – $2.99
Step 1: Install the shelf wherever you like. Because the shelf is unfinished wood, you can stain it or paint it any color you like. We decided to just oil it with some butcher block oil and leave it as it.
Step 2: Install the rail. We installed the rail into the wall directly underneath the shelf but you could also install it directly into the bottom of the shelf if you wanted to. You could even buy two rails and have two rows of hooks if you did it that way.
And here it is all finished and ready to go. This took about 20 minutes to do and looks way better than any pre-made options we found online.
And with that, happy Friday and thanks for reading!
