Before my first sprint tri, people told me that I should at least try an open water swim so I don’t have a panic attack and drown on race day. Luckily, the weather was cooperating this weekend for a nice swim out at Walden Pond. We usually bike out to the pond but since the water temp was around 55 degrees, we needed to bring along our wetsuits and swim gear. Fortunately, my friend Mike had a car with bike racks so we decided to drive out and bring our steeds for a ride after our little arctic swim.
Walden pond is actually an awesome place for open water swimming. The water is surprisingly clear and the temperature wasn’t too bad once you got in and swam around for a few minutes. It’s also really scenic and a great place to explore in the summer.
Also, we weren’t the only ones crazy enough to get in the water that day.
We swam for roughly 30 minutes (or as much as our bodies would allow us) but it was definitely smart to get in a swim before the big day. I was also able to test out my Safer Swimmer (the orange thing hanging off of me) that day. It’s an awesome device that basically acts like a storage compartment/flotation device/visibility tool that drags behind you while you swim. It’s a pretty neat little device.
After our swim, we set out for an easy 20 miler through Concord and Carlisle. It was an amazing day for a ride considering the weather we’ve been having in Boston thus far.
And what’s a ride through Concord without stopping for an iced coffee at our favorite shop. Bikes, coffee, and Texas socks – the perfect day.
Even this little guy was out and about checking out the scenery.
Stay tuned for my first sprint tri race report coming up next! Spoiler alert: I didn’t drown!
And with that, thanks for reading!
