One of our new favorite salad toppings are candied walnuts. We usually get them from Trader Joe’s but they are $4.19 for a tiny little bag. Why are nuts so expensive??? Especially since the only ingredients are walnuts, sugar, oil and salt. So in order to cut down on costs, we set off to replicate our own.
Start by placing 1 1/2 cups of walnuts on a pan with foil and toasting them at 350 degrees for 7-10 min. Remove from the oven and let cool.
Next, heated up 1/2 cup of sugar in a medium size pot.
The sugar will eventually melt and turn golden brown.
You have to move quickly in this next step because the sugar hardens in about a minute. Toss the walnuts into the pot and give them a quick stir until they’re all coated. Then, quickly move them back to the tray and separate the walnuts with two forks.
Sprinkle some salt over the finished walnuts and let them harden completely before transferring them into bag.
And there you have it. No more paying ridiculous amounts of money for something so simple. You can eat them as is or add them to your favorite salad. Bon appétit you nut loving savages.
