Seattle Day 3 – Red Hook Brewery, Flying Fish & Cupcake Royale

The next morning, Ashley and Samir treated us to the perfect breakfast – Einstein’s breakfast bagels, vanilla lattes, and leftover Top Pot Doughnuts. Breakfast of hungover champions.

Day 3 started off with a trip to Samir’s workplace at Microsoft out in Redmond before hitting the Red Hook Brewery. This is where he codes hard and fast every day. Microsoft has a huge campus with a bunch of different buildings scattered around. They also have a free bike sharing program which is awesome. However, the most fascinating part was Lake Bill hidden behind the building. It was complete with a waterfall and filled with giant vicious koi fish all throughout the “lake.” We then walked over to the Skype building next door to get some snacks. Apparently, weekends are “bring your family to work and eat all of the food” time because we weren’t the only ones there after the baby bell cheese and sodas.

We then headed on over to the Red Hook Brewery out in Woodinville for the brewery tour. The tour cost $5 but you get a free pint glass and quite a lot of beer compared to most tours that I’ve been on. The tour was very similar to Harpoon’s. They talk about the brewing process and then show you their large holding tanks and their bottling line. Then they let you sample their beers in their large tasting room. My favorite was the cider. It was sweeter and less tart than most so I really enjoyed it. I’m not a huge fan of IPA’s so I didn’t really like their Long Hammer ale but that’s just me. I’m also convinced that it smelled like weed. Marijuana is legal now in WA so it wouldn’t surprise me if they changed their recipe. However, it was a really fun tour and we got plenty of beer to sample so no complaints here.

We were starving by this point so we drove back into the city for happy hour at Flying Fish.

Flying Fish has a reputation for fresh seafood with Thai influences. Every day from 4-6 pm, they have happy hour with 1/2 priced apps and discounted drinks. They had a variety of options to choose from so we ordered a few of Samir and Ashley’s favorites. We started off with fresh bread and butter, Crispy Calamari with honey jalapeno mayonnaise and cilantro oil, and the Crispy Catfish with yellow curry and carrot daikon salad. We then ordered the Jerk Butter Chicken Wings with mango, pineapple slaw and dill sauce, and the Panko Breaded Soft Shell Crab with orange remoulade, cherry tomatoes, red onions and red wine vinaigrette. Lastly, we had to get the Pulled Pork Sliders with barbeque sauce, chipotle mayonnaise, provolone cheese and romaine lettuce. Our favorite had to be the crispy catfish in the yellow curry. I wish we had ordered 12 of those. Nevertheless, the presentation and execution of all the dishes were spot on. Everything was extremely fresh and well prepared.

After dinner, our plan was to go to Hot Cakes (finally made it on Seattle day 5) but they were under renovation that night so we went down the street to Cupcake Royale. According to their website, Cupcake Royale was founded in 2003 as Seattle’s first cupcake bakery and café. In fact, Cupcake Royale is the nations first cupcake bakery to open outside of NYC! Their cupcakes are made from scratch daily and quite tasty. I ordered the Tiramisu cupcake and Selma got the Pumpkin Maple. They are denser than most but the frosting helps balance them out.

All in all we had an amazing time exploring some of Ashley and Samir’s favorite local eateries and sampling some local beers.
